For almost 200 years, M. Chapoutier has been considered one of the top domain and negociant wine producers in France’s Rhône Valley region. Michel Chapoutier took command in the early 1990s with an impassioned master plan: Present a new approach to the world of winemaking by applying biodynamic philosophy to viticulture.
In essence, this meant allowing the vineyards to naturally adapt to their specific environment without the use of chemical sprays and herbicides. Rigorous pruning and soil management would also be central tenets — all conducted and determined by the earth’s lunar cycle. The result: Wines that are natural and speak intimately of their own terroir.
Of course, Chapoutier wasn’t simply content with this change in direction. Inspired by a blind friend of his, he decided to double print all of his wine labels in Braille — a first in the industry.
Still, there were new worlds to conquer. Chapoutier has long seen the cooler growing regions of Australia as the perfect region to hone the craft of his biodynamic wines. Since 1998, Tournon Estate in Mount Benson, South Australia, has been producing “Rhône style” Syrah, plus a Cabernet Sauvignon on the red brown soil of this cool viticultural area. Low yields and traditional French vinification have produced powerful yet elegant wines — ideal for cellaring and accompanying food.
As is his custom, Chapoutier continues to push the boundaries of winemaking and grape growing both in France and in Australia. At Domaine Tournon, the goal is to produce Syrah from cool climate terroir, combining the skills of top Australian Vignerons with the historic practices of the Rhône.
